When people ask me what is my favorite children's book, it is hard for me to choose just one. But, Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech would be right at the top of the list. I have read this book with every class I have had over the past 3 years, as well as recommended it to many students to read on their own. Here is why I love Ruby Holler:
Dallas and Florida are boy and girl twins living in a children's home for orphans. They are always getting into some sort of trouble. Let's just say they have a hard time following the rules. What Florida and Dallas want the most is to be adopted, but no family is able to control them, until Sairy and Tiller come along. They willingly welcome Dallas and Florida into their home in the Holler. The twins can't seem to figure these two people out; no one has ever treated them as Sairy and Tiller do. Will the twins be able to trust Sairy and Tiller? Or will they find their way back to the orphanage?
Read this fabulous story to learn about sensitivity of others, trusting those who care about you, and learn that mistakes are just opportunities to learn. Ruby Holler is a story about how kindness can go along way!
